Cleaning an Amiga floppy drive

Summary

Watching videos of the amount of grime that builds up in a floppy drive inspired me to give mine a clean

Steps

Once removed from the Amiga, the three screws need to be removed to slide the drive from the case.

I was aiming to clean the sensors and the head moving worm gear.

Moving the sensor aside for a moment shows just how much grime has built up over the years.

Its definitely in need of a clean.

Using a cotton bud soaked in Isopropyl alcohol (99.9%) I gently cleaned all the areas highlighted previously, including removing the old black grease from the drive worm gear,

While I was at it I used a number of cotton buds to remove as much dust and grime as possible from anywhere accessible.

There was a lot of grime.

I re-greased the worm gear with Wd40 White Lithium grease and another cotton bud.

The board was slid back into the case and fastened together with the three original screws. It was a bit of a faff due to the two board construction held together by a plug.

Conclusion

It was probably a good choice to clean this out before using it!

Next Steps

I also have an external floppy drive and based on the cleanliness of the internal one, this should probably also be cleaned.
